Bird flu (H5) – an important biosecurity reminder
New Zealand has confirmed two detections of H5 bird flu in wild birds. Biosecurity New Zealand and other government agencies are closely monitoring the situation and continuing surveillance across wild birds, poultry and other animals.
At this stage, there is no evidence of widespread transmission among wild birds in New Zealand, no evidence of mass wildlife mortality, and no detection in poultry. The risk to people remains low.
As a precaution, berth holders are reminded to:
- Avoid handling sick or dead birds
- Keep pets away from sick or dead birds
- Report groups of three or more sick or dead birds to Biosecurity New Zealand on 0800 80 99 66
- Continue to practise good hygiene, particularly after contact with bird droppings or areas where birds gather
According to Health New Zealand and the Ministry for Primary Industries, human infection with avian influenza is rare and generally occurs following close, prolonged contact with infected birds or contaminated materials. Eggs and poultry remain safe to eat when handled and prepared as usual.
By remaining vigilant and reporting anything unusual, the boating community can help support New Zealand's biosecurity efforts.
