Women in Marine event inspires marina team at the 2026 Auckland Boat Show
Ten female staff members from across Westhaven, Auckland Central and Silo marinas attended the inaugural Women in Marine event this morning at the Auckland Boat Show, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
Held at the Viaduct Events Centre ahead of the show’s opening, the event brought together women from across the marine sector to share experiences, build connections, and discuss how the industry continues to evolve.
The session was hosted by marina entrepreneur and podcast host Nicky Vaux and featured a panel of inspiring speakers including Olympic gold-medal sailor Jo Aleh, Hillary Buckman and Isabell Zitzelsberger.
Speakers shared their personal journeys navigating a traditionally male-dominated industry and encouraged attendees to embrace opportunities, build confidence, and support one another through meaningful connections.
One of the key themes discussed was how the marine industry has changed over time. Speakers noted that the number of women working in marine roles has doubled in the past two decades, alongside a broader shift in mindset recognising the diverse skills and perspectives women bring to the sector.
For many attendees, the event was both inspiring and energising. Staff members reflected on the value of hearing first-hand stories about perseverance, stepping outside comfort zones, and overcoming the feeling of being an “imposter” when entering spaces where women have historically been under-represented.
The event also provided an opportunity to connect with other women working across the industry. As one staff member shared, it was “really nice to be surrounded by that positive feminine energy and to realise just how many other women you actually know in the marine industry.”
The Women in Marine event marked a new initiative for the Auckland Boat Show organisers, with hopes it will become a regular feature of the show in future years.
